Splitbean ("we", "the app") helps you scan receipts and split bills with others. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your choices.
Information we collect
- Account information: your email address, display name, and username, used to create and secure your account.
- Profile information: your chosen avatar and the payment handles you add (e.g. Venmo, PayPal, or Cash App usernames) so others can pay you back.
- Bills and content you create: receipts you scan, photos of those receipts, line items, the people/guests you add, groups, and how items are assigned and split.
- Limited technical data necessary to operate the app (e.g. authentication tokens). We do not use third-party advertising or tracking SDKs.
How we use your information
- To provide the core features: reading receipts, splitting bills, sharing bills with participants, and tracking who has paid.
- To let participants you add to a bill see their share and (if they are registered users) the bills they are part of.
- To keep your data synced across your devices.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
Receipt scanning (OCR)
When you scan a receipt, the image is sent to our processing service and to a third-party OCR provider (Mindee) solely to extract the text (items, tax, total) for your bill. The image is stored in your account's private storage so you can view the bill later.
Payments
Splitbean does not process payments or move money. "Pay" buttons open your chosen third-party app (Venmo, PayPal, Cash App) prefilled with the amount and recipient. Any payment happens in that app under its own terms and privacy policy.
Data storage and security
Your data is stored using Supabase (Postgres database and file storage). Access is restricted by row-level security so you can only access your own data and bills you participate in. Data is transmitted over encrypted connections.
Sharing
The only people who can see a bill are its owner and the participants added to it. If you create a public share link for a bill, anyone with that link can view that bill's split and payment details — share it only with people you intend to. We do not share your data with anyone else except the service providers needed to run the app (hosting, database, and OCR), who process it on our behalf.
Your choices and rights
- Access & edit: view and edit your profile and bills in the app.
- Delete: delete bills you own at any time. To delete your entire account and associated data, contact us and we will remove it.
- Permissions: the app requests camera and photo-library access only to scan or select receipts; manage these in your device Settings.
Children
Splitbean is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
We may update this policy; material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above.
